My current work emerges from the place of imagination I have found as an avid reader of science fiction throughout my life. That genre's drive to transcend conventional boundaries—to imagine beyond current realities and social constraints—directly informs my current artistic practice. Just as science fiction writers construct new worlds through speculative thinking, I use algorithmic design to generate forms that probably wouldn't emerge through entirely traditional methods.
Working primarily in Grasshopper 3D, I build complex instruction sets that function as creative algorithms. These digital frameworks allow me to explore multiple variations of a single concept through randomized parameters, revealing nuanced possibilities within the constraints I've established. The virtual environment becomes a space of discovery, where mathematical relationships and controlled variability collaborate to produce results that differ from direct manipulation.
This algorithmic approach fundamentally alters my relationship to making. Rather than imposing preconceived forms, I design systems that generate variations within defined parameters—processes that produce solutions distinct from traditional methods, not only because of the tools used, but perhaps more importantly because of the different conceptualization required. The methodology also demands a different kind of authorship: I create the rules, but the forms emerge through computational logic and variable (pseudo-random) operations.
While these forms emerge from a virtual environment, the sense of materiality to the final forms is very important to me – embodying a dialogue between human intention and machine logic, between designed parameters and emergent properties. Like science fiction, I hope that these objects suggest new ways of seeing and being in the world.
